HISTORY OF THE IMPERIAL NETBALL CLUB

(Warning - History currently being re-formatted)

1982 & 1983 - A & B grade teams were submitted. Some of those involved in the early days of the Club during both 82 and 83 were; Robyn Johnson, Jenny Appelby, Jacqui Konitzka, Tracey Curl, Jenny Flaherty, Annie Leahy, Liz Channon, Sharon Johnson, Bronwyn Rossiter, Denise Lukey, and Janine Bartel. Imps used the North Primary School as a home court.

1984 - No teams entered

1985 - Orignial Courts built, The Murray Bridge Imperial Netball Club Inc was established. One Senior Team. The club re-entered their teams with sports-women such as Wendy Mobbs, Jill Peake, Denise Gould, Marylou Hughes, Judy Pointon and Kay Rance.

1986 - Imperials had recruited strongly, entering new and stronger teams.  The club entered and A, B and C grade. Coached by Wendy Mobbs and welcomed Julie Shorter, Julie Heading, Carol Button, Fiona & Julie Zadow Tracey DeMichelle, Jenny Hill, Kerry Lienert, Jill Wilson and Kerryn McNicol. The A Grade won the premiership coached by Wendy Mobbs. Imperials defeated Ramblers 32 to 28. Julie Shorter was named Best on Court. Kerry Lienert won the RMNA C Grade Best & Fairest with 25 votes. The A Grade Premiership Team was- GS-Carol Button, GA-Wendy Mobbs, WA-Julie Heading, C-Denise Gould, WD-Kaye Rance, GD-Julie Shorter, GK-Jill Peake. 

1987 - The club moved from the North Primary school courts to new netball courts laid at Johnstone Park at a cost of $8,500.00. A loan was granted from Council for $5,500.00 New players: Kate Jaensch, Jodie Langcake, Leanne Pearson (Earle), Liz Smelt, Meredith Farnham, Paula Dillon, Wendy Rice, Kathleen O’Riley and was coached by Wendy Mobbs. Deb Leahy was the RMNA Runner up Best & Fairest in C Grade.

1988 - Imperials still had no juniors. The Cocktail Party became fashionable in 88, with our club holding one at the Race Course.  Many different clubs attended that night and Julie Zander (Tailem Bend) won the Limbo competition. New players for some of the clubs in 88 were- Jo Snell, Suzie Brion, Sharlene Richman, Alex Shorter, Vicky McArdle, Patsy Butler, Deanne Ling and Karen Guadagnin. Coach was once again Wendy Mobbs.

1989 - PRESIDENT CAROL BUTTON, SECRETARY TREASURER BRENDA BYRNE. KERRYN MCNICOL, CAROL BUTTON, KAYE RANCE, WENDY MOBBS, CAROLL DONNELY PLAYING. Imperials still only entered senior teams. Murray Bridge indeed was on the netball map, in 89 all Australian player and umpire Chris Burton held an umpiring clinic at the Imps clubrooms. Imperials appointed a new coach in Marg Kennedy who won the Association Best & Fairest in her first year in the competition. Other new players to join in 1989 were Sherryn Morrell and Tania Weinert. Fiona Zadow won the RMNA B Grade Best & Fairest award.

1990 -The club had by now raised it’s profile and fielded A, B, C, and U17 for the first time. Kay Rance became treasurer of the Association. Some of the personnel involved in 1990 were - Coach Chris Wright, Charmaine Graetz, Debbie & Fiona Button, Julie Bald, Sharon Kerr.  Under 17s were Lynley Curtis, Megan Webb, Sharon Hameister, Jodie Heitmann, Nada Bratkovic, Kelly Dodd, Kelly Weidenhofer, Alison Donnelly. Our B Grade girls lost the Grand Final to Tailem Bend 58 to 48 in extra time after a 44 all draw. Sherryn Morrell won the B Grade Best & Fairest with 40 votes. Jo Snell was A Grade Runner Up with 35. 1991 - New players for 1991 were; Sharon Webster, Nancy Sartor, Jodie Hietmann, Nicole Schulz, Vanessa Edwards. The association celebrated its 10th birthday with a dinner and Best & Fairest vote count at the Imperial Football Clubroom at the end of the 91 season. Jo Snell was selected in a RMNA “Squad of the Decade” and the Team of the Year for 1991.

1992 - Chris Wright was appointed A grade coach. Nicole Hay, Denise Blenkiron, Helen Daish, Sharon Gommers, Anne Marie Long, Alison and Susie Garrett all joined the club. RMNA B Grade Best & Fairest was Chris Wilson with 38 votes.
Jo Snell was once again named in the RMNA Team of the Year.

1993 - COURT FENCED, COSTING $2500. FIRST JUNIOR TEAMS FIELDED?PRESIDENT NANCY PLUMMER SECRETARY VICE PRESIDENT KAYE RANCE VICE SECRETARY/ TREASURER ANNE MARIE LONG . COMMITTEE CAROL DEMICHELE AND KAYE RANCE  Coaches - A GRADE HELEN SMITH B GRADE CAROL DEMICHELE C GRADE MARYLON HUGHES AND NADINE COOPER. Coaches were Denise Blenkiron and Jo Snell. New players were Carol Burns, Shirley Hartmann, Sherry Kinsella, Jacqualyn Kempe, Sharyn Gommers, Danielle Smith, and Audra Niemz. The C Grade defeated Jervois 43 to 41.Best On Court was Jacqualyn Kempe.

1994 - New Uniform bought in body suit AND AQAU SPARACHUTE MATERIAL Skirt. Sherry Kinsella from Imps was Vice President of the Association.  Coach Helen Smith took the reins as A Grade Coach with B Grade Coach being Carol DeMichele. Lyndall Obst, Tania Whatman, Louisa Hackett, Penny Oliver.

Our Service Company sponsored club junior and senior championship awards this year for the 1st time, with points awarded for wins by each grade per club.

The inaugural winners were Senior Club - Imperials.

A LOAN TAKEN OUT TO BUILD SECOND COURT. $500 DONATION FROM THE FOOTBALL CLUB FROM THE COLTS COMMITTEE TOWARDS THE NEW NETBALL COURTS. $6000 HAD BEEN RAISED SO FOR FOR THE NEW COURTS. $1000 FROM THE LADIES FOOTBALL COMMITTEE FOR THE COURTS. RACHEL GRAGORY CHOSEN FOR THE U16 SASSA SCHOOLGIRLS TEAM. A GRADE COACH: HELEN SMITH. TERRY CRITCHLEY APPOINTED AUDITOR.
Lorraine Graetz took on the Association President’s job to begin what would be a three year term. Imperials entering all grades into competition. Imperials made a statement with their new Body Suits. New Players for 1995-Lynley Curtis, Jodie Jaensch, Nadine Cooper, Vanessa Bartel, Linda Tabe.

A combined presentation dinner was held at the Imperial Football Club Inc clubrooms where the River Murray team of the year and the Murray Bridge team of the year were announced. An inaugural match between the two teams was held at Christian Reserve, with the Murray Bridge team winning by 6. Sharon Hameister and Denise Blenkiron from Imps made the RMNA Team of the year

Life Membership was awarded to Carol Burns and Helen Smith.

Under 11s had a very successful carnival. Coach Jo Snell was very proud her young team that were runners up.
B grade, C grade, Under 17s and Under 15s all reached finals. With the Under 15s reaching the grand final, losing to Tailem Bend.

The club received an Active club Grant for $7,000 for new courts.
Sharon Taylor received her RMNA 200 game award.
Rochelle Smith was named in the Under 15's Swallows team coached by Marg Angove

Coaches: A grade - Helen Smith, B Grade - Tracey DeMichele, C Grade -             Under17 - Barb Gregory, Under 15 - Emily Walton, Under 13            Under11s - Jo Snell.
New courts were laid in February 2003.
Rochelle Smith was named in the SA 17 and Under State Squad.
C Grade were Premiers.
